24th Annual Pregnancy Resource Forum
On October 10th , Georgetown University Right to Life 24th Annual Georgetown
University Pregnancy Resource Forum hosted Serrin Foster of Feminists for Life and
Carol Day, an adjunct professor in the Georgetown University School of Nursing and
Health Studies, and Director of Health Education Services. The forum is modeled after the very first at Georgetown, also chaired by Ms. Foster, which served as the basis for many others around the country, as well as nationwide HHS grants. At its core, this forum is a review of the pregnancy resources on campus, a review of what progress has been made, and objective-setting for the future. Both panelists reiterated the goals of the university’s pregnancy resource programs – to provide the necessary counseling and aid to allow a mother to carry her pregnancy to term while maintaining her academic standing and academic future.
The issue of campus pregnancy may seem far away to many Georgetown
students, Georgetown University but when it matters for some, it is inevitably
inextricable from their daily lives. This may seem to conflict with the general student mission at Georgetown to learn as best she can and work towards a successful career after graduation. It is in light of this disparity between the small portion of the student body served and the tremendous impact the service aims to make that the Pregnancy Resource forum is an important tradition to uphold.
Regardless of the everyday demand, we must continue to let women know that they have better options than abortion, that Georgetown can give them tools to pursue their academic dreams while pregnant or raising a child.
It was encouraging to see the services offered and encouraging to see how
students may become involved. As always, the club experience some opposition when advertising this event. Sadly, it is not clear to all that accommodations at Georgetown are administered apolitically, and GU Right to Life seeks to promote access to maternal resources along the entire spectrum of the student body. We are proud that RTL stepped up to host this when others would not.
