25th Annual Pregnancy Resource Forum Recap

The 25th Annual Pregnancy resource forum took place on October 1st . For the first time it was virtual, but the turnout was strong, and the stories were powerful. Carol Day from Georgetown Health Education Services returned to speak about the resources Georgetown provides. Kelly Marcum called in from the Northwest Pregnancy Resource Center told us about the work of Georgetown grads in the neighborhoods of DC and the resources available in the greater community. Joyce McCauley-Benner, with her experience in Feminists For Life, talked about how we got to where we are and the progress that has been made on the pro-life front in colleges.

The forum’s primary concern was the general lack of awareness among the student body, as well as among prospective students, regarding our support systems. Suddenly pregnant students on campus may find themselves tragically unaware of the very real possibility to carry their child to term and raise it, even as they flourish academically and advance their degree attainment, feeling forced down a path of putting up the child to adoption that many might be averse to, or even aborting the child, if they happen to be morally compromised. Those young mothers applying to colleges may be forced to pass up on a great Georgetown opportunity on the basis of this information asymmetry. It is our duty as college students (as pro-active bystanders, as we are often told), to broach this topic in discussions of student health among peers, so destigmatizing and offering information that we know can help others.

Each of the speakers told their story. Each was a mother, and each birth was life changing. To hear their own words, listen to the Zoom recording. It is worth it.

pour la vie,
