What Pro-Life Means to Me

Hi Y’all!

You may not know me, but I am the voice behind all those emails that those who are subscribed to our listserv get every week without fail! At least I try to, I’m a little bit of an unorganised person, but I do love nice fonts and trying to brighten emails so that when they go out they make everyone’s day a little bit better. One thing, though, that I do have to say about my position is that I had never expected myself to be on the board of Right to Life.

Now, when I was in my first year and I heard of Right to Life I thought it was fascinating. Going to a traditionally liberal school, it was hard to be publicly and loudly pro-life. I had many of those conversations when the other person just assumed that I had the same opinion as them on many of those pro-life topics that we discuss and it was hard for me to tell them that I didn’t have those same views. When I came to Georgetown and joined RTL I thought I would be left behind in the dust because I had never been to a March for Life or done pro-life centered community service. I had no idea who half the speakers that the board spoke of and brought in were. But, as time went on I realised that my “newness” to the pro-life community wasn’t really newness.

Something that I realised into my first semester as a part of RTL at Georgetown was that I had been doing some of what we do as a club on my own. Advocating for the rights and human dignity of those who are detained, being supportive of those in my life who are parents, and generally being a kind and respectful person to anyone and everyone are all forms of being actively pro-life. RTL is more than just a club for advocating for people at set points in their lives or specific types of people. I think that RTL is really a club about supporting people, no matter who they are and advocating for people to always be treated with dignity and respect. I think that realisation was really what helped me become more a part of the RTL community and what led me to apply to the board. I wanted to help others come to that same realisation, and I wanted to be a part of the realisation of RTL’s goals.

I think that being pro-life is more than a series of separate events that we do once in a while, I think that being pro-life is a mindset that carries us through each day and has an effect on our interactions with people. And I hope that as a part of RTL I can help offer more opportunities for people (myself definitely included) to curate and practice our being pro-life.

I hope that you all have a great week! See you in the next email :)
